A man identified as Umaru Wakili from Gora Dan Saka in Katsina State has confessed to aiding the release of several bandits from police custody. Wakili, aged 45, was apprehended by the Katsina Community Watch Corps (CWC) and admitted to being part of a network that secures bail for detained criminals, thus facilitating their return to criminal activities.
In a video shared on social media, Wakili revealed he had assisted numerous bandits in avoiding prosecution. He named individuals he claims are involved in criminal activities, including Alhaji Tukur Harno, Yaruku Lukudu, Musa Dan-gida Daoji, and Marayi Uba-daba. He also mentioned the son of Alhaji Yau, who was previously detained for cattle rustling. Wakili stated that while he did not personally secure bail for all those involved, he had worked closely with accomplices to help free them from legal custody.
When questioned further, Wakili expressed regret, saying, “I promise this will be the last time I engage in such actions. I will never bail out bandits again. What we have done is wrong.” He urged others involved in similar activities to abandon them, stating, “Banditry is not something to be proud of. If anyone is involved, they should stop.” Wakili also vowed that if given a second chance, he would actively help authorities apprehend those involved in banditry.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the security situation in Katsina State, where banditry has led to insecurity and hardship for many communities. The Katsina Community Watch Corps continues to work closely with law enforcement to curb these activities, though challenges remain.
Authorities have yet to comment on whether further arrests will be made based on Wakili’s statements or if they will pursue additional suspects named in his confession.
