October 30, 2024 – Abuja, Nigeria
The Nigerian Senate has officially commenced the screening of seven new ministerial nominees appointed by President Bola Tinubu. This process, initially scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed to allow additional time for preparation.
The new nominees are stepping in following President Tinubu’s recent dismissal of five ministers. Last week, the Presidency announced the removal of Uju-Ken Ohanenye (Women Affairs), Lola Ade-John (Tourism), Tahir Mamman (Education), Abdullahi Gwarzo (State for Housing and Urban Development), and Jamila Ibrahim (Youth Development). According to the statement, these changes aim to enhance the administration’s efficiency and effectiveness as it seeks to fulfill its promises to Nigerians.
The nominees awaiting Senate confirmation include Nentawe Yilwatda, Muhammadu Dingyadi, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Jumoke Oduwole, Idi Maiha, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, and Suwaiba Ahmad. These individuals cannot officially begin their duties until they secure Senate approval, as mandated by Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.
The recent reshuffle is part of what the Presidency described as “eight far-reaching actions” intended to strengthen governance and optimize performance across key sectors.
