The Zone 9 Police Command, Umuahia, has strongly denied recent allegations of extortion leveled against its officers. A viral post claimed that ₦1,100,000 was extorted from Kingsley Ofobuike Chigozie by officers, but the command has labeled these accusations as unfounded and part of a deliberate attempt to tarnish its reputation.
In a statement issued on November 12, 2024, the Zonal Command provided a clear explanation of the circumstances surrounding the case:
On October 29, 2024, the Nigerian Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED), Ohafia Branch, filed a formal petition against Kingsley. The petition accused him of operating an unregistered chemist, selling unapproved drugs, and performing illegal abortions. Following approval from the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Zone 9, a search warrant was executed at Kingsley’s premises.
During the operation, various illegal substances, including tramadol, codeine, and other controlled drugs, were seized. The officers also recovered forged documents, including fake certificates of registration with NAPPMED and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. These documents were found to be fraudulent.
Kingsley reportedly confessed to forging the certificates and performing 10 illegal abortions. His confession was further corroborated by statements from victims.
The Zone 9 Police Command emphasized that the extortion claims are a baseless attempt by Kingsley to avoid facing legal consequences. The Assistant Inspector-General of Police has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure transparency and accountability.
The public is urged to disregard the false claims circulating online. The Zone 9 Police Command remains dedicated to upholding justice and maintaining public safety.
