ISWAP Terrorists Attack Borno Community, Destroy Equipment

Borno State, November 16, 2024 — In the early hours of Saturday, suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a violent attack on the town of Kareto, located in Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria.

Local sources report that the terrorists stormed the area, causing extensive damage and leaving residents in fear. The attackers reportedly destroyed equipment, although details on the extent of the destruction remain unclear.

A source within the community confirmed to SaharaReporters that, as of now, security reinforcements are still being awaited to bring the situation under control and protect the town’s residents.

Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama also confirmed the attack through a post on his social media handle, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

This latest attack comes months after ISWAP militants were seen engaging with locals in Borno villages during a public outreach campaign, known as da‘wāt, where they encouraged people to join their cause. The group has reportedly been distributing food supplies and cash to lure villagers into their ranks.

Despite Nigerian military efforts to combat these insurgents, ISWAP continues to pose a significant threat in the Lake Chad region. The group has been actively recruiting members, promising improved security and governance under their envisioned Islamic caliphate.

Security forces are expected to respond promptly to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of the affected communities.
