Abuja, November 16, 2024— In a historic diplomatic event, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Nigeria for a State visit, marking the first visit by an Indian head of government since 2007. The Nigerian Presidency officially confirmed the visit in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, Prime Minister Modi landed in Nigeria on Saturday and was welcomed at the Presidential Villa in Abuja by President Tinubu on Sunday. The visit aims to deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries, which was first established during the 2007 visit of former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
During their bilateral discussions, President Tinubu and Prime Minister Modi are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in various critical sectors. Both leaders will sign several Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) to bolster collaboration in areas such as trade, technology, health, and education.
“President Bola Tinubu will welcome Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a State Visit at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday,” the statement read. “Both leaders will exchange signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) to enhance collaboration in critical sectors.”
India, the world’s second most populous nation, shares significant economic and cultural ties with Nigeria. This visit underscores the commitment of both countries to strengthening their longstanding relationship.
With this visit, President Tinubu and Prime Minister Modi are looking to explore new avenues for mutual growth, especially in trade and investment, while fostering stronger diplomatic ties.
