Gunmen Attack Convoy of Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, Policeman Killed in Umuahia

In a shocking incident on the evening of November 17, 2024, gunmen ambushed the convoy of Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, the member representing Isialangwa North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, resulting in the tragic death of a police officer and injuries to another.

The attack occurred around 9 PM at Ubakala, in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants, clad in black and wearing police-style armor jackets, intercepted the convoy using a Toyota Corolla.

Reports reveal that Hon. Onwusibe was not present in the vehicle during the attack. However, two police officers and a driver were traveling in the convoy. The attackers reportedly opened fire after the officers identified themselves, fatally shooting one officer and injuring another.

Following the attack, the gunmen fled the scene, prompting an immediate response from the Ubakala Police Station. Officers of the Abia State Police Command are currently pursuing the suspects, who are believed to be kidnappers.

Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Abia State for an official statement were unsuccessful at the time of this report.

This incident underscores the persistent security challenges in the region and the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. Authorities have assured the public that every effort is being made to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, known for his commitment to his constituency, has expressed deep sorrow over the incident and has extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer.

The attack serves as a grim reminder of the need for enhanced security measures to protect public officials and citizens alike, especially in the face of rising criminal activity.
