Africans Call For Action on Human Rights at Global Assembly

African delegates at the 12th World Movement for Democracy Global Assembly have issued a powerful declaration reaffirming their commitment to democracy, human rights, and social justice. Convened on November 22, 2024, the Assembly brought together activists and leaders to address the persistent challenges undermining Africa’s progress toward inclusive and sustainable democracies.

The delegates condemned the devastating impact of armed conflicts across the continent, particularly in Sudan, where violence and displacement have left millions in dire humanitarian conditions. They expressed alarm over the prolonged crises in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Sahel region, attributing these conflicts to resource exploitation and insufficient global attention.

The statement also criticized the international community for prioritizing crises outside Africa, citing a “troubling disregard for African lives.” This disparity, they argued, perpetuates cycles of violence and underdevelopment on the continent.

Other concerns included the resurgence of military coups and electoral manipulation in countries such as Niger, Mali, and Zimbabwe. Delegates denounced widespread human rights violations, including the persecution of activists and journalists and the marginalization of vulnerable communities, such as refugees and LGBTQ+ individuals.

The declaration outlined specific recommendations:

1. To African Leaders: Focus on peaceful conflict resolution through inclusive dialogue and enhance the African Union’s capacity for conflict prevention.

2. To Civil Society: Mobilize efforts for democratic reforms and amplify the voices of marginalized groups.

3. To the Global Community: Ensure African crises are treated with equal urgency and halt exploitative practices fueling resource-driven conflicts.

4. To African Youth: Lead future democratic movements with integrity and innovation.

The delegates emphasized that African-led solutions, bolstered by robust international cooperation, are critical to addressing the continent’s challenges. They called for a unified effort to build inclusive democracies that reflect the values of equality, resilience, and justice.

The declaration serves as a clarion call for global solidarity and immediate action, urging stakeholders to prioritize Africa’s development and democratic governance on the international agenda.

Signed at the close of the Assembly, this historic statement underscores the resolve of Africa’s leaders and activists to champion democratic ideals despite significant adversity.
