Heir to Malaysian Fortune Chooses Monastic Life Over $5 Billion Inheritance

In a profound act of renunciation, Ven Ajahn Siripanyo, the only son of Malaysian billionaire Ananda Krishnan, has chosen the path of a Buddhist monk, foregoing an inheritance exceeding $5 billion. Ananda Krishnan, often referred to as AK, is Malaysia’s third-richest individual, with a business empire encompassing telecommunications, satellites, media, oil, gas, and real estate.

At 18, Siripanyo visited Thailand to connect with his mother’s family and participated in a temporary ordination at a Buddhist retreat. This experience ignited a spiritual calling, leading him to embrace monastic life permanently. For over two decades, he has resided as a forest monk and currently serves as the abbot of Dtao Dum Monastery near the Thailand-Myanmar border.

Raised in London alongside his two sisters, Siripanyo received his education in the United Kingdom and is fluent in at least eight languages, including English and Tamil. His mother, Momwajarongse Suprinda Chakraban, is a descendant of the Thai royal family, adding a noble dimension to his heritage.

Despite his monastic commitments, Siripanyo maintains familial ties, occasionally traveling to visit his father. Notably, he has been known to use private jets for such visits, exemplifying the Buddhist principle of honoring family relationships.

Ananda Krishnan, a devout Buddhist and philanthropist, respects his son’s decision to pursue a spiritual path. This narrative mirrors themes from Robin Sharma’s “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari,” highlighting a real-life journey of renouncing material wealth for spiritual fulfillment.

This story underscores the enduring human quest for meaning beyond material success, offering a poignant example of choosing inner peace over worldly riches.
