Sokoto State, Nigeria, was thrown into mourning on Monday after bandits attacked Dantudu Lajinge village in the Sabon Birni Local Government Area, killing nine members of a local vigilante group and abducting their wives.
According to eyewitness accounts, the bandits stormed the village in a violent assault, targeting members of the community security outfit. Reports indicate that the attackers slit the throats of their victims, leaving their bodies in pools of blood. However, some residents claimed the victims were shot at close range, and one survivor is currently receiving medical care at a hospital.
Bello Dan-Tudu, a resident of the village, described the horrific scene: “They targeted our vigilante members and slaughtered them like rams.” Another witness, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the violence and the abduction of the wives of the slain men.
The Chairman of Sabon Birni Local Government Council, Ayuba Hamisu, confirmed the attack and expressed his deep sorrow. “Nine of our people were killed while I was attending a function in Abuja. I have suspended all engagements and am heading back home to support my people,” he stated.
The Sokoto State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement. Repeated calls and messages to police spokesperson Rufai Ahmad went unanswered as of the time of reporting.
The attack highlights the escalating insecurity in Nigeria’s Northwest region, where communities have suffered repeated violence from armed groups. Residents are calling on authorities to increase security efforts to prevent further tragedies and ensure justice for the victims.
This incident adds to the growing list of atrocities in the region, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable solutions to tackle banditry and protect vulnerable communities.
