The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced an indefinite strike at Niger Delta University (NDU), Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State. The decision was made following a meeting at the union’s secretariat in Amassoma on Tuesday.
According to ASUU, the strike is a response to the Nigerian government’s failure to honor previous agreements reached with the union. Specific details of these agreements and the implications for academic activities at NDU are expected to emerge in the coming days.
This announcement adds to growing unrest in Nigeria’s academic sector. On Monday, the Lagos State University (LASU) chapter of ASUU also declared an indefinite strike, citing the state government’s failure to implement a federally approved salary increase of 25% to 35% for its members since January 2023.
The indefinite strike at NDU is anticipated to disrupt academic programs and heighten concerns about the future of education in the region. Stakeholders are urging swift resolution of the issues to minimize the impact on students and staff.
This development underscores persistent tensions between the government and the university union over unmet commitments, further complicating Nigeria’s already strained education system.
