Putin Open to Meeting Trump for Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his willingness to engage in peace talks with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump concerning the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Speaking during his annual end-of-year press conference, Putin stated he was ready to meet Trump “at any time” to discuss the matter.

Trump, who takes office in January, has claimed he can negotiate an end to the war within hours of assuming office. However, this assertion has raised concerns in Kyiv, where officials fear the potential for peace terms that may favor Russia.

During the press conference, Putin declared that Russian forces currently have the upper hand in the conflict. Reflecting on the military campaign, he admitted his regret at not launching the offensive sooner but could not provide a timeline for regaining territories like the western Kursk region, which remains under Ukrainian control.

“I don’t know when I’m going to see him (Trump). I haven’t talked to him in more than four years. But I’m ready, of course, anytime,” Putin said. He added that any discussions with Trump would focus on “negotiations and compromises.”

Putin praised the advancements of Russian troops in eastern Ukraine but acknowledged challenges, particularly in resettling displaced residents of frontline areas. Despite his confidence in eventual success, he admitted, “I cannot say when exactly this will happen.”

The Russian president also addressed domestic economic issues, including inflation and the impact of Western sanctions. While insisting that the economy remains stable, he conceded that rising food prices and labor shortages pose serious concerns.

On military developments, Putin hinted at the capabilities of Russia’s hypersonic missile, suggesting it could target Kyiv to test Western air defenses. He also criticized his country’s intelligence services for recent security lapses, referencing the assassination of a senior Russian general in Moscow.

When asked if he would change anything about his decision to invade Ukraine in February 2022, Putin said his only regret was not acting sooner. “Knowing what is happening now, I believe the decision should have been taken earlier,” he remarked, referring to what Russia calls its “special military operation.”

As Trump’s inauguration approaches, global attention will focus on whether negotiations between the two leaders can bring an end to one of the most significant conflicts in recent history.
