Warri Catholic Priest Suspended Over Secret Marriage in the U.S

The Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from priestly duties after it was revealed that he secretly entered into marriage in the United States.

In a statement titled “Decree of Suspension,” dated January 16, 2025, and released to journalists on January 19, the diocese confirmed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe married Ms. Dora Chichah on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, Texas.

The suspension, signed by Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, Bishop of Warri, and Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, Chancellor/Notary, referenced Canon 1394 S1, which imposes *latae sententiae* (automatic) suspension on clerics who attempt marriage.

The statement read:

“By this action, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe has incurred a *latae sententiae* suspension, and I, Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, hereby officially decree that he is suspended from the exercise of sacred ministry.”

According to the Diocese, Fr. Oghenerukevwe had previously requested to be released from his canonical obligations on November 30, 2024. However, he failed to complete the necessary documentation before proceeding with the marriage.

As a result, he is barred from presenting himself as a priest of the Diocese of Warri, with all canonical implications of the suspension now in effect. The Diocese clarified that he retains the right to appeal the suspension and seek its revocation or amendment if he demonstrates a willingness to reform.

Reports suggest that footage of the marriage ceremony circulated widely on social media, prompting the Diocese to take swift action.

The Diocese concluded its statement with a message of reflection and reconciliation:

“May God grant him the grace to reflect on this situation and guide him on the path of reconciliation.”

The suspension serves as a significant development in the Catholic Church’s commitment to upholding its doctrines and disciplinary measures.
