Awka, Anambra State –The body of Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha North constituency, has been discovered on the Second Niger Bridge.
Azuka was abducted by unknown gunmen on December 24, 2024, while returning home for Christmas. His kidnapping led to widespread concern, with security forces launching investigations and search operations.
Confirming the tragic discovery, Anambra State Police Command spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga stated that officers were in the process of recovering the corpse. “Our men are bringing the body to the state police headquarters in Amawbia. We will release further details once it arrives,” Ikenga said.
No group has claimed responsibility for the killing. However, in recent years, the Southeast region has experienced a surge in violent crimes, including kidnappings and targeted assassinations. Authorities have frequently pointed fingers at the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed factions, though IPOB has consistently denied involvement.
Azuka’s murder adds to the growing insecurity in Nigeria, where different regions face unique threats. While the Northwest struggles with kidnappings for ransom, the Northeast remains a battleground for insurgent groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The late lawmaker was a prominent member of the Labour Party (LP). His death marks another high-profile political assassination in Nigeria, raising concerns about the safety of public officials and the deepening security crisis.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue into Azuka’s abduction and murder.
