Gunmen have kidnapped Reverend Father Livinus Maurice, a Catholic priest of the Port Harcourt Diocese, along with two others in Rivers State. The priest, who serves as the Parish Priest of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Isokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area (LGA), was abducted while returning from a hospital visit along the Elele-Isiokpo road.
A statement issued by the Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt, signed by its Chancellor, Reverend Father Bernadine Anaele, confirmed the incident, which took place on Wednesday, February 12.
“Although the matter has been reported to security agencies, Christ’s faithful in Port Harcourt Diocese and across Nigeria are urged to intensify prayers for the safe and unconditional release of the priest and those with him,” the statement read.
The Rivers State Police Command has acknowledged the abduction and assured the public that efforts are underway to rescue the victims.
Speaking on the matter, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that the Command has deployed officers to track the kidnappers and ensure the safe release of Father Maurice and the two others. She added that security forces are determined to arrest the suspects and bring them to justice.
This abduction highlights the growing security challenges in Rivers State, where kidnappings for ransom have become increasingly frequent. Armed groups continue to target religious leaders, government officials, and civilians, causing fear and unrest within communities.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the other two victims or the possible motive behind the attack. Meanwhile, members of the Catholic community and local residents have intensified prayers, hoping for the safe return of the abducted priest and his companions.
Security agencies are expected to provide further updates as the investigation continues.
