In a move to enhance family cohesion, boost employee morale, and provide additional care for newborns, the Imo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Hope Uzodimma to approve the introduction of paternity leave for male officers in the State Public/Civil Service.
The resolution was reached during the plenary session on Thursday, February 20, 2025, following a motion sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Honourable Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu.
While presenting the motion, Rt. Honourable Iwuanyanwu, who represents Nwangele State Constituency, emphasized the crucial role fathers play in a child’s emotional, social, and cognitive development. He stressed that newborns rely on strong parental bonds, and granting paternity leave would enable fathers to provide the necessary support to their spouses following childbirth.
“Imo State is a progressive state with a forward-thinking governor dedicated to improving the welfare of public and civil servants. If this motion is approved, it will help address marital challenges and strengthen family bonds,” Rt. Honourable Iwuanyanwu stated. He also pointed out that the Federal Government, alongside states such as Enugu, Oyo, Ondo, and Lagos, has already implemented paternity leave policies, significantly improving workplace morale and family unity.
The motion, seconded by Chief Whip and Member Representing Oru-East State Constituency, Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri, received co-sponsorship from several lawmakers, including Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, Hon. Johnleoba Iheoha, Hon. Okey Ernest Udeze, Hon. Chisom Ojukwu, Hon. Obinna Ambrose Egu, and Hon. Innocent Ikechukwu Ikpamezie.
Further reinforcing the motion, several lawmakers made commendable contributions in support, including Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi (Owerri-West), Hon. Barrister Chisom Ojukwu (Nkwerre), Hon. Prince Obinna Ambrose Egu (Ngor/Okpala), and Hon. Dr. Uzoma Francis Osuoha (Ohaji-Egbema), among others.
Following extensive deliberations, the Speaker, Rt. Honourable Chike Olemgbe, called for a vote, and the motion was unanimously adopted. The resolution urges Governor Uzodimma to approve a 14-working-day paternity leave policy and direct the Head of Service of the state to issue an official circular for its implementation.
The Clerk of the House was subsequently instructed to communicate the resolution to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
