A student nurse at the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, Agbor, Osato Edobor, has found herself in trouble after a TikTok video showed her allegedly sharing an unofficial response to a chant meant to welcome Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The incident occurred during the First Lady’s official visit to Asaba on March 25, 2025, as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, where she distributed 10,000 professional kits to midwives in the South-South zone.
According to the school authorities, students were expected to chant, “Na our mama be this o, we no get another one,”*during the event. However, a group of students responded instead with, “Na your mama be this oo ehh…,” a statement perceived as disrespectful to the First Lady.
The video of the chant was later found on Edobor’s TikTok page, prompting the school to issue a disciplinary query on March 27. The query, signed by the school Provost, Mrs. Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, described the act as “malicious” and a violation of the school’s code of conduct.
The Provost wrote, “It has come to the notice of the school authority that you, Student Nurse Osato Edobor… were found to be engaged in a malicious act of recording/singing and posting an unofficial response… on your TikTok page.”
The offence, as cited in the student handbook, is punishable under the institution’s rules. Edobor was instructed to provide a written explanation within 24 hours detailing why she should not face disciplinary action.
This situation has sparked online debate regarding freedom of expression, social media use among students, and the role of disciplinary measures in Nigerian higher institutions.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s visit is part of a nationwide initiative aimed at improving healthcare delivery and providing support to healthcare professionals across all regions.
