The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on the Nigerian government to act swiftly and decisively to end the ongoing violence and killings in Plateau, Benue, and other troubled parts of the country.
In a statement released on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN) condemned the latest attack in Zike hamlet, Kimakpa community, Kwall district of Irigwe Chiefdom, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, where at least 52 people, including a family of eight, were reportedly murdered.
Describing the attack as “horrific and deeply troubling,” Osigwe raised alarm over what he termed the “glaring failures” in Nigeria’s internal security system. He stressed that no society can grow under the constant fear of violence, warning that continued bloodshed threatens not just lives, but also trust in national institutions and the rule of law.
Quoting Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which prioritizes the security and welfare of citizens, Osigwe declared it unacceptable for Nigerians to live in fear while armed groups continue to target communities.
He called on President Bola Tinubu and the governors of affected states to urgently implement coordinated, intelligence-led security operations to protect vulnerable populations. Osigwe also demanded immediate response from the heads of security agencies, including the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Army Staff, emphasizing the need for professionalism and urgency.
The NBA President further urged the National Human Rights Commission and civil society organizations to independently monitor the situation and help ensure accountability and justice for victims.
“The NBA remains resolute in its commitment to the rule of law, the protection of human rights, and justice for all,” Osigwe said, extending heartfelt condolences to the families and communities affected by the violence.
This strong message from the NBA comes amid rising public anger and despair as Nigerians continue to witness recurring attacks by armed groups, especially in rural communities.
