Brave Nigerian Captain Kamal Falls to Boko Haram

Captain Kamal, the Nigerian Army officer recently killed in an attack by Boko Haram terrorists in Izge, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, has been mourned nationwide as a symbol of bravery and service to his country.

According to the Emir of Gwoza, Mohammed Shehu Timta, the attack occurred at around 1 a.m. on Wednesday. The terrorists stormed the quiet farming community, opening fire in a surprise raid. Captain Kamal, alongside Nigerian troops, local hunters, vigilantes, and members of the civilian Joint Task Force, responded promptly and courageously. Tragically, he was killed during the exchange, alongside another soldier.

Captain Kamal’s death comes as Nigeria continues to battle relentless terrorist activity, especially in the country’s North East region. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, over 2,000 people were killed across the country due to violent conflicts, with Borno State accounting for the highest number—515 deaths. Among these victims were 136 security personnel.

In the same attack where Captain Kamal lost his life, three Boko Haram insurgents were reportedly killed, with security forces recovering motorcycles, bicycles, an operational vehicle, and a sophisticated rifle.

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State recently expressed concern over the worsening insecurity. He urged the federal government and military leaders to combine military operations with non-kinetic approaches, especially given that over 300,000 Boko Haram members have surrendered in the past three years—many of them, he said, being farmers rather than fighters.

Captain Kamal’s service reflected deep commitment to protecting Nigerian citizens against extremist violence. Known among his colleagues for his discipline, courage, and leadership, he had led numerous successful counter-terrorism operations in the region before his untimely death.

His passing underscores the persistent danger faced by Nigerian troops in the fight against Boko Haram, a group that has ravaged the North East for over a decade. Despite previous claims of the group’s defeat, their deadly operations continue, often targeting both civilians and military personnel.

As the nation mourns, many are calling for greater support for the armed forces, improved equipment, and a more strategic approach to counterinsurgency.

Captain Kamal is survived by his family and fellow soldiers who remember him as a fearless warrior and a patriot who gave everything for Nigeria’s peace and stability.
