Libyan authorities have arrested five Nigerian nationals for allegedly stealing electrical equipment from a farm in Sabha, a city in southern Libya.
The arrest was announced by Migrant Rescue Watch via a post on social media on Monday, May 26, 2025. According to the report, the suspects were apprehended on Sunday, May 25, by the Al-Qahira Police Department** in Sabha.
The post stated:
“#Libya 25.05.25 – Al-Qahira Police Dept. (Sabha) arrested 5 #migrants of Nigerian nationality for theft of electrical equipment from a farm. All referred to public prosecution for legal action.”
Authorities confirmed that the five individuals have been referred to public prosecution for further investigation and potential legal proceedings.
This incident adds to a growing list of crimes involving migrants in Libya, a country known for its challenges with illegal migration and human trafficking. It also comes amid continued efforts by international organizations to address migrant-related issues in North Africa.
This report follows a separate case from April, where the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested 22 Nigerians in a global operation targeting financial sextortion schemes linked to multiple teen suicides in the United States.
Both events highlight the increasing scrutiny around migrant activities and underscore the need for international collaboration to ensure both accountability and safety across borders.
