In a recent development, a widespread power outage in Northern Nigeria has been attributed to rising insurgency activities, affecting millions of residents across several states. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has initiated collaborations with the National Security Adviser’s Office to protect engineers and critical infrastructure.
Nigeria’s Transmission Company (TCN) has reported that increasing insurgent attacks have led to major disruptions in the northern power grid, resulting in extensive blackouts across multiple states. For over a month, residents have reported irregular power supplies, with many areas experiencing complete power cuts, intensifying economic and social challenges in the region.
According to TCN, insurgents have targeted transmission lines and substations, undermining the region’s fragile power infrastructure. These targeted attacks not only damage physical assets but also place TCN engineers and workers at risk. To address the situation, TCN has secured the support of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), which has deployed additional security personnel to safeguard key transmission sites and ensure the safety of on-site engineers.
TCN spokesperson, Engr. Ndidi Mbah, stated, “The insecurity challenges in Northern Nigeria have posed significant threats to our operations. Our engineers work under difficult conditions, and ensuring their safety is critical to restoring and stabilizing power supply in the affected regions.”
Residents in cities like Kaduna, Kano, and Maiduguri are bearing the brunt of the power outage, with businesses struggling to maintain operations. Hospitals and critical facilities rely on costly diesel generators, pushing up operational costs and creating accessibility challenges. Many residents expressed their frustration, citing the blackout’s impact on daily life and economic stability. The lack of stable electricity has led to increased transportation costs, food spoilage, and challenges in accessing vital services.
The partnership with ONSA aims to increase the presence of security forces in key regions, especially near critical infrastructure points. Authorities believe this collaboration will enable rapid response to insurgent threats and provide a safer environment for TCN staff. Security teams will also work to assess and repair damaged substations and lines.
The TCN’s partnership with national security forces highlights the severity of Nigeria’s insurgency issues and their far-reaching impacts. While security measures are a step forward, the government faces continued pressure to implement long-term strategies that will prevent future incidents. A comprehensive approach, including community engagement and support for TCN’s operational capabilities, is essential for tackling Nigeria’s energy crisis head-on.
