Wukari, Taraba State- A tragic mix of violence and miscalculation unfolded on Thursday as gunmen ambushed the family of Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, along Kente Road in Wukari Local Government Area. In a bid to protect the family, a police escort accidentally shot the governor’s sister, Atsi Kefas, during the chaos.
The incident occurred while the governor’s mother, Jumai Kefas, and Atsi Kefas were traveling through the area, which has seen a rise in banditry. Security expert Zagazola Makama confirmed that the attackers targeted the family vehicle, creating a tense situation that led to the accidental discharge by the escort officer.
Thanks to the swift intervention of military personnel, both Jumai and Atsi Kefas were rescued. They were evacuated to safety using an air ambulance. Atsi was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention, although her condition remains unclear.
Troops later recovered the vehicle at the scene, finding an empty magazine and passenger luggage inside.
This incident highlights the growing insecurity in parts of Taraba State, where banditry and other violent crimes have become increasingly common.
Authorities are investigating the attack and the accidental shooting, promising to enhance security measures to prevent similar occurrences.
