Nigerian Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has stirred heated reactions online after a viral video surfaced in which he appeared to defend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In the video, Kuti criticized Nigerians who believe they are smarter than the president, calling them “stupid.”
His remarks have triggered widespread debate, with many social media users accusing him of publicly endorsing Tinubu, while others supported his perspective on governance.
The controversy follows an earlier video by social media commentator VeryDarkMan, who criticized Tinubu’s administration and described the president and his cabinet as outdated. In response, Seun Kuti argued that Tinubu is a skilled politician who understands Nigeria and Africa’s political landscape.
“If you think you’re smarter than Tinubu, you’re the one that is stupid,” Kuti stated in the viral clip, emphasizing that the president is a “brilliant strategist.”
Kuti’s comments have sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing their displeasure. Some users accused him of being out of touch with the struggles of ordinary citizens, while others acknowledged Tinubu’s political influence.
A user, Mannie_147, wrote:
“To hold power in Nigeria, you have to be a brilliant strategist!! And BAT (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) from day one has always shown that intelligence, smartness (including being street-smart), and a very good political mind. We can’t take that from him at all.”
Another user, MillerOsakpolor, disagreed, saying:
“Brilliant strategists that collapsed an economy.”
wissmooth also commented:
“Tinubu is smarter than everyone in Nigeria, yet his policies are bringing hardship and suffering to the nation. Make shame catch you, Seun.”
Others, like ikenga_, questioned Tinubu’s current abilities:
“If you think that Tinubu of 2009 is Tinubu of 2025, then you must be suffering from dementia.”
This is not the first time Seun Kuti has made controversial statements. Recently, he sparked debate after revealing that his sister lost over ₦50 million in a cryptocurrency scheme, calling crypto investments a scam.
Additionally, Kuti previously made headlines when he claimed that Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington gained fame after an encounter with American rapper Diddy.
As the debate over Kuti’s comments continues, it remains to be seen whether he will respond to the backlash. Meanwhile, President Tinubu’s leadership and policies remain a topic of intense scrutiny among Nigerians, with many calling for economic and political reforms.
