In a significant political realignment, three sitting senators from Kebbi State—Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South)—have defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Their defection was announced after a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, May 9, 2025.
Present at the meeting were Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu, and Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Senator Atiku Bagudu. The senators were led by APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.
This move marks yet another wave of defections from the PDP, which has been battling internal crises.
Recently, six House of Representatives members from Delta State also left the PDP for the APC, citing unresolved issues within the party. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas confirmed the switch on the floor of the House.
Defectors, including Rep. Julius Pondi and Rep. Victor Nwokolo, blamed the PDP’s leadership struggles at both national and zonal levels for their departure.
With rising instability in the PDP, more realignments could occur ahead of the 2025 general elections.
