The terror group responsible for the abduction of a Chinese expatriate and his Nigerian colleague during an attack on a mining site in Kwara State has demanded a ransom of ₦1 billion for their release.
The kidnapped individuals — identified as Mr. Sam Xie Wie, a Chinese national, and Mr. David Adenaiye, a Nigerian — were taken during a violent ambush on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in Oreke-Oke-Igbo, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
According to intelligence sources, the abductors used one of the victim’s phones to contact an associate, Mr. Leo Liang, to make the ransom demand.
“Kidnappers who abducted a Chinese expatriate, Mr. Sam Xie Wie, and his Nigerian counterpart, Mr. David Adenaiye, in Kwara State have demanded a ransom of ₦1 billion for their release, according to fresh intelligence obtained on Friday,” stated counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama.
“The terrorists used the victims’ mobile phone to reach out to Mr. Leo Liang and issued their demand. Security operatives and local vigilantes are working around the clock to ensure the safe recovery of the victims,” he added.
The attack at the mining site also left two officers of the Nigerian Police Force dead. The fallen officers — Assistant Superintendent of Police Haruna Watsai and Inspector Tukur Ogah — were attached to the 45 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Unit in Abuja and were on protective assignment at the location.
Confirming the tragic event, the Kwara State Police Command issued an official statement:
“The Kwara State Police Command confirms a deadly attack and abduction incident that occurred on June 4, 2025, at about 1830hrs. This heinous act took place at a mining site in Oreke-Oke-Igbo, Ifelodun Local Government Area.”
According to the Divisional Police Officer in Oreke, “A group of armed assailants stormed the facility, shot and killed two police operatives on duty, and stole their service rifles before fleeing with two workers.”
The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Adekimi Ojo, has condemned the attack in strong terms and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“This act of brutality is deeply saddening. The Command has swung into immediate action. Tactical and intelligence-driven efforts are underway to rescue the abducted victims and apprehend the attackers,” he said in the statement.
He further noted that security agencies are working closely with community stakeholders to increase surveillance and prevent further incidents.
“This cowardly attack not only took lives but also sought to destabilize peace in the region. We are committed to restoring order and ensuring justice is served,” the Commissioner emphasized.
As of the time of filing this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, authorities believe it may be linked to a rising network of criminal syndicates targeting foreign workers in Nigeria’s resource-rich but insecure regions.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for improved protection of mining sites and foreign nationals operating in remote parts of the country. Security operations are ongoing, with the hope of safely rescuing the victims and restoring calm to the affected community.
