Ajax release new Bob Marley-inspired third kit and fans go wild

Ajax have released their stunning new third shirt that pays tribute to reggae legend Bob Marley, whose music has become iconic amongst fans of the club in recent history.

Marley’s song ‘Three Little Birds’ has become a club anthem for the Dutch side after they adopted it after a friendly in 2008.

Ajax played against Cardiff City in a pre-season match at Ninian Park, and after the game, the song was played in the stadium to the Ajax fans who were kept behind.

The supporters sang along and enjoyed it so much that they took it home with them and made it their anthem.

The new third shirt, created by Puma, is black and includes their red Ziggo sponsor and world-renowned badge.

The trims of the shirt are striped using the iconic Marley colours of red, gold and green.

Eagle-eyed fans will notice there are three little birds sitting on top of Amsterdam’s Andreas crosses stitched onto the back of the collar, rounding off a stunning strip that football shirt collectors all over the world will be desperate to get their hands on.

The shirt went on sale on Friday morning on Ajax’s website, and the high demand for the shirt actually caused the site to crash, according to AS.

As a result, an online queuing system had to be introduced to avoid further technical difficulties, with fans keen to get hold of the shirt as soon as possible.

Marley’s daughter, Cedella, spoke of how touched she was that her father’s song is now the anthem of the Amsterdam side.

“I am beyond touched that Ajax has taken Three Little Birds and made it their anthem,” she said.

“Stories like this warm my heart and show how impactful songs like Three Little Birds can be.

“Soccer was everything to my father…and to use his words ‘football is freedom’.”

Ajax will be wearing the shirt in European competitions having qualified for the Champions League.
