Agric Minister Promises Cheaper Food for Nigerians

Agriculture Minister Abubakar Kyari has assured Nigerians that efforts are underway to address the soaring food inflation plaguing the country.

“We have heard citizens’ cries about the exorbitant cost of food during the festive season and their diminished purchasing power,” Kyari declared in a joint statement with State Minister Aliyu Abdullahi.

Acknowledging the National Bureau of Statistics’ report of a record 32.84% food inflation rate in November 2023, Kyari assured Nigerians that the government is actively working to address the issue. He identified transport costs, infrastructure shortcomings, and exchange rate volatility as key contributors to the affordability crisis.

However, Kyari offered a glimmer of hope by highlighting the Ministry’s efforts to boost domestic production of staple crops like wheat, rice, maize, and cassava. Pointing to the launch of the dry season farming initiative in November 2023, he urged farmers to heed expert advice from Extension Service Agents.

Looking ahead to 2024, the ministers outlined several ambitious plans to increase agricultural output and improve food affordability. These include:

– Cultivating Fallow Land

– Revitalizing Bank of Agriculture

– Expanding Insurance Coverage

– Boosting Diverse Agricultural Sectors

Kyari further emphasized the importance of collective effort, calling on all stakeholders in the agriculture and food security sector to embrace the opportunities of the New Year. He expressed confidence that the combined efforts of the dry and wet season farming seasons will result in significantly increased food production and, consequently, lower prices for Nigerian consumers.

While Nigerians remain cautious about promises amidst persistent inflation, Kyari’s commitment to tackling the food crisis offers a ray of hope for a more affordable and food-secure future. The success of his plans will depend on effective implementation, continued collaboration, and favorable economic conditions.
