GOVERNOR URGES INCREASED BUDGET FOR ARMY WELFARE

In a bid to fortify the defense apparatus of Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodimma has called for an augmentation in budgetary allocations to enhance not only the infrastructure of Army Barracks but also the welfare of military personnel, their families, and dependents. Speaking during a visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Army on Monday, May 6, 2024, Governor Uzodimma stressed the paramount importance of adequately funding the military for the effective defense of the state, citing it as crucial for the sustenance of democracy.

The governor appealed to the National Assembly to prioritize support for the Army, asserting that sufficient funding is imperative to motivate soldiers to safeguard the state diligently. He emphasized that the welfare of the military should be a top priority for both the Federal Government and the National Assembly to uphold democracy in Nigeria.

Governor Uzodimma warmly welcomed the Committee to Imo State and urged the Brigade Commander, 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze, to utilize the visit as an opportunity to showcase the challenges confronting the Army in the state, seeking possible solutions.

Highlighting recent security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, and destruction of public and private assets, Governor Uzodimma underscored the necessity of seeking assistance from the Nigerian Army to address these issues effectively in Imo State and the wider South East region.

Furthermore, the governor acknowledged the sacrifices made by military personnel, expressing concern for the families left behind by officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. He advocated for support and assistance from both the Federal and State Governments to aid the families of fallen soldiers.

To alleviate the hardships faced by families residing in barracks, Governor Uzodimma proposed empowerment initiatives, access to power supply, transportation, and skill acquisition programs to improve their quality of life.

Acknowledging the synergy between the Army and other security agencies, the governor emphasized the importance of collaboration to enhance security efforts in the state.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Army, Rt. Hon. Abdullahi Mamudu, commended Governor Uzodimma for his leadership and transparency, describing him as a straightforward individual dedicated to the welfare of his people. He assured the governor of the Committee’s commitment to reviewing the budgetary allocations for the Nigerian Army and assessing the implementation of projects on the ground.

Hon. Modestus Osakwe, the Commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs, also attended the meeting, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to ensuring the security and well-being of its citizens.

In attendance were other dignitaries including the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, the Chief of Staff, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie, and members of the Imo State Expanded Executive Council.

The visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Army signifies a collaborative effort between the state government and federal legislators to address security challenges and enhance the welfare of military personnel in Imo State. Governor Uzodimma’s advocacy for increased budgetary provisions reflects his administration’s commitment to bolstering security and promoting the well-being of all residents.
