Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, alongside governors, past governors, Senators, and other prominent figures of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the North Central region, are scheduled to gather in Lafia, Nasarawa State, this Saturday to tackle the ongoing crisis within the party.
According to reports, notable attendees will include governors from Kwara, Kogi, Benue, Nasarawa, and Niger States.
The primary agenda of the meeting is to address the discontent that has gripped the North Central zone following the reallocation of the APC National Chairman position. Previously held by former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the chairmanship was reassigned to Kano State in the North West under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last year.
This decision has sparked significant unrest within the party ranks, prompting calls for a reevaluation of the zoning arrangement.
Insiders within the party reveal that the stakeholders aim to formulate a unified stance to present to President Tinubu regarding the chairmanship issue.
The meeting will be presided over by the governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatai Abdulrazak.
Tensions escalated recently when APC members staged protests at the party’s National Secretariat against the leadership of current APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje. However, the demonstrators were dispersed by Ganduje’s supporters and APC security personnel.
Sources within the party emphasize that the outcome of the Lafia meeting will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the APC in the coming weeks.
“As you know, the President has remained silent for some time on the crisis in the party. He is waiting to receive reports from the zones on the state of the party before making decisions. The North Central stakeholders will present the resolution of their meeting to him,” a party source stated.
The gathering in Lafia underscores the significance of addressing internal conflicts within the APC, particularly in regions where grievances have escalated to the point of public demonstration.
The outcome of this meeting will not only impact the leadership dynamics within the party but also its cohesion and effectiveness in the political landscape.
As the APC navigates through these internal challenges, the eyes of the nation are fixed on the decisions and resolutions that will emerge from the discussions in Lafia.
In the midst of political uncertainty and growing dissent, the ability of the APC to reconcile internal differences and maintain unity will be vital in shaping its trajectory in the months leading up to the next election cycle.
Stay tuned for further updates on the outcomes and implications of the North Central stakeholders’ meeting in Lafia.
