The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared June 12 a public holiday to commemorate the 2024 Democracy Day celebration. This was announced by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Aishetu Ndayako, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The minister congratulated Nigerians on the occasion and urged them to reflect on the efforts of the country’s founding fathers. He also emphasized the need for Nigeria to remain a united, secure, peaceful, and indivisible entity.
The government’s declaration is a nod to the significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s democratic history. The day marks the anniversary of the 1993 presidential election, which was won by Chief Moshood Abiola but annulled by the military government.
In 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 as Democracy Day, honoring the sacrifices of Abiola and other heroes of democracy. The day has since become a symbol of Nigeria’s struggle for democratic governance.
As Nigerians celebrate Democracy Day, the government has reiterated its commitment to positive reforms, economic revival, and enhanced security. The minister urged citizens to remain steadfast on the tenets of democratic governance and look forward to a better future for Nigeria.
The declaration of June 12 as a public holiday is a testament to the country’s growth and development. It serves as a reminder of the importance of democracy and the need for Nigerians to continue striving for a more united and prosperous nation.
