Edo State Declares itself Cholera-Free, Intensifies Awareness Campaign

Nigeria battles with a new cholera outbreak that has claimed 53 lives nationwide, Edo State has taken proactive measures to prevent the spread of the disease. The Edo Primary Health Care Development Agency (EDSPHCDA) has declared the state cholera-free and has intensified its awareness campaign to ensure it remains that way.

According to Irene Uabor, a Health Educator with the EDSPHCDA, the agency has started sensitization campaigns in local government areas to educate residents on the importance of personal hygiene and sanitation practices. Uabor emphasized that cholera is a highly contagious bacterial infection caused by consuming contaminated water or food, and can be fatal if left untreated.

To prevent the spread of cholera, the agency is advising residents to boil water before drinking, avoid eating street food, and wash their hands regularly with soap and clean water, especially before eating and after using the toilet. Communities are also encouraged to improve waste management practices, ensuring that dirt is disposed of in designated areas and not left in the open where it can contaminate water sources.

The EDSPHCDA has also heightened media campaigns to raise awareness and promote preventive measures against the disease. This includes radio and television jingles, social media campaigns, and community outreach programs.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has activated its emergency centre as the death toll in the recent outbreak of cholera reached 53 nationwide, with 1,528 suspected cases recorded across 31 states. The NCDC has called on states to intensify their surveillance and reporting of cholera cases to enable prompt response and control of the outbreak.

Edo State’s proactive approach to preventing the spread of cholera is commendable, and other states would do well to follow suit. By prioritizing personal hygiene and sanitation practices, residents can significantly reduce the risk of contracting cholera. With the NCDC’s emergency centre activated, prompt response and control of the outbreak are possible.
