The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has taken significant steps to enhance the country’s security and environmental sustainability. In a recent meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu, the council approved several key initiatives.
Firstly, the FEC approved $1.442 million to procure ammunition for the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). This move aims to strengthen the agency’s fight against drug trafficking, a menace that has plagued Nigeria for years. The additional firepower will enable the NDLEA to more effectively combat drug cartels and criminals, making the country a safer place.
In addition to the ammunition approval, the FEC also gave the green light for the purchase of 33 Milano CNG vehicles for the NDLEA, worth N1.99 billion. These vehicles will enhance the agency’s mobility and enable them to respond more efficiently to drug-related crimes.
Furthermore, the council approved the procurement of two body scanners worth N985 million, to be deployed at Abuja and Lagos international airports. This move will bolster security at the nation’s airports, ensuring the safety of travelers and preventing illegal activities.
In a bid to reduce plastic waste, the FEC also announced a ban on single-use plastics in all federal ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). This decision aligns with the 2022 National Policy on Plastic Waste Management and aims to mitigate the severe plastic pollution in Nigeria. The ban will help reduce plastic waste, clogged drains, and environmental pollution, creating a cleaner and healthier environment for citizens.
The council’s decisions were announced by the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako. The moves demonstrate the government’s commitment to enhancing security, protecting the environment, and improving the overall well-being of Nigerians.
