The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has launched its Green Initiative, aiming to deploy 840 electric vehicles and install 5,000 solar power systems nationwide. This ambitious program was officially inaugurated by Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, at the Police Resource Centre in Abuja on Thursday.
President Tinubu emphasized that the initiative is a crucial step in Nigeria’s efforts to combat climate change and improve law enforcement. He noted the significant environmental challenges Nigeria has faced, such as shrinking water bodies, frequent floods, and erratic power generation.
“A sustainable development program that engages innovative green solutions is a strategic intervention,” said Tinubu. The Green Initiative integrates green technologies into public service, setting a standard for sustainable policing in Africa.
“This approach will not only boost the operational efficiency of the Nigeria Police Force but also contribute significantly to our climate goals,” Tinubu stated. He reiterated his administration’s support for green solutions, highlighting Nigeria’s commitments made at the COP 28 conference in Dubai.
Inspector General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun praised the initiative as a milestone in the NPF’s evolution, linking climate change to security challenges like resource conflicts and infrastructure disruptions. “Climate change poses the most existential threat to humanity, affecting our way of life and socio-cultural existence,” Egbetokun said.
The NPFGI focuses on four main pillars: Solar Power Deployment, Electric and Gas-Powered Vehicles, Nature-Based Solutions, and Community Green Outreach. This initiative aims to align with international climate goals and integrate environmental considerations into policing strategies.
Egbetokun highlighted the security implications of climate change, such as the drying up of Lake Chad, increased vulnerability to crime, and resource conflicts. The initiative also supports the Federal Government’s economic reformation and seeks to improve the well-being of NPF personnel.
“Linking climate action with national socio-economic development strategies presents unique opportunities for addressing environmental challenges while fostering economic growth and resilience,” Egbetokun added. Law enforcement agencies globally are recognizing the impact of climate change on community safety and well-being.
