Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, affirmed on Monday that Kenneth Okonkwo, a party spokesperson, remains a trusted ally despite his recent criticisms.
On Sunday, Okonkwo publicly criticized Obi’s handling of party issues, accusing him of not addressing the internal crisis within the Labour Party. Okonkwo, who joined the LP in 2022, expressed disappointment in Obi’s leadership and his perceived failure to support the Labour Unions effectively.
In a letter posted on X, Okonkwo stated, “Every member of the Labour Party is confused today as to the future of the Labour Party because of lack of leadership from PO over the party, and unfortunately, when they look up to me to tell them about PO’s standpoint, I sincerely have nothing to tell them because I don’t know myself.”
Okonkwo added, “I cannot continue to speak on behalf of a leader that I do not know his stand on issues of great importance. I simply don’t know how to manipulate facts. I am shocked that PO could not openly support the noble efforts of the Labour Unions who founded the Labour Party as a base to fight for the welfare of workers to the extent that some of them are openly saying that PO is now the problem of LP.”
In response, Obi took to his X handle on Monday, stating that differing opinions are natural and should not lead to hostility. “I want to, therefore, categorically and emphatically declare that Okonkwo remains my beloved brother and a trusted ally. I sternly caution against referring to him as a mole or making any negative remarks. Kenneth Okonkwo has stood by me through thick and thin, and his loyalty and commitment cannot be overstated or diminished,” Obi wrote.
Obi emphasized the importance of unity, respect, and civility within the party, even in the face of disagreements. He stated, “Disagreements and differing opinions are a natural part of any group, society, or movement, and it is essential to maintain a level of respect and decorum even when we disagree. Having differing views does not make someone an enemy, and it is crucial to engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to personal attacks or negative remarks.”
He concluded by urging all supporters of a New Nigeria to remain strong and focused, reinforcing that unity should prevail despite any internal conflicts.
