A significant power outage has affected Kano, Yobe, and Jigawa states following the collapse of a Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) tower in Gunduwawa Village, Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
On August 11, 2024, at approximately 9:28 a.m., the Kano-Hadejia 132kV transmission line tripped, leading to a loss of around 16.6 megawatts. The disruption occurred after a trailer carrying a container collided with TCN’s tower T16 in Gunduwawa Village. The impact caused the tower to buckle and fall, also damaging a nearby residential building.
The incident has left several local government areas, including Hadejia, Gumel, Gagarawa, Nguru, Mallammadori, and others in both Jigawa and Yobe states, without power. Currently, there is no alternative power source available for TCN’s Gagarawa and Hadejia substations.
TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, assured that the company is taking urgent steps to address the situation. “We are committed to swiftly dismantling the damaged tower, erecting a new one, and restoring power supply,” Mbah stated. A contractor has been appointed to rebuild the tower and is expected to begin work immediately.
No fatalities have been reported, and the driver involved in the accident is in police custody. The situation has been reported to the Gezawa Divisional Police Station for further investigation.
The public is advised to expect power disruptions in the affected regions until repairs are completed.
