Why USA approved $20 Billion Armss Deal with Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

The United States has approved a massive $20 billion arms deal with Israel, including fighter jets and military equipment, amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave the green light for the potential sale on Tuesday, according to the Pentagon.

In a statement, the Pentagon said: “US Secretary of State Antony Blinken approved the possible sale of F-15 jets and equipment worth nearly $19 billion. He also approved the possible sale of tank cartridges worth around $774 million and army vehicles worth $583 million.”

The statement added that “the tank rounds would be almost immediately available for delivery. The Boeing Co F-15 fighter jets would take years to produce and deliver.”

The US has been a long-time ally of Israel, and this deal is seen as a sign of continued support for the country’s military efforts. However, the timing of the deal has raised eyebrows, as it comes amid a devastating war in Gaza that has sparked international outcry.

The conflict, which began with a Hamas attack on October 7, has resulted in significant loss of life and property in the Palestinian enclave. The US has attempted to broker a ceasefire deal in Gaza, but so far, no agreement has been reached.

While approving weapons to Israel, Washington has also tried to arrange a ceasefire deal in Gaza that would potentially stave off a wider Middle East war. Fears of a broader war have increased since the recent killings of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut. Both drew threats of retaliation against Israel.

The US arms deal with Israel is likely to be seen as a further escalation of the conflict, and may undermine efforts to reach a peaceful resolution. The deal has sparked concerns among international leaders, who fear that it may embolden Israel to continue its military campaign in Gaza.
