Ten maritime workers who were abducted by suspected pirates in Rivers State have reportedly regained their freedom. The workers were kidnapped along the Bonny-Port Harcourt waterway on September 2, but were released after their captors abandoned them on the Onne channel when they noticed they were being trailed by operatives of the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operations Base (FOB), Bonny.
A security source confirmed the release of the workers, stating that they were reunited with their families after receiving medical treatment. The source added that the kidnappers fled when they realized they were being pursued by the Nigerian Navy.
The abduction of the maritime workers had raised concerns about the safety of workers in the industry, particularly in the Bonny-Port Harcourt waterway. However, the swift response of the Nigerian Navy and the subsequent release of the workers have been commended by stakeholders.
