The Teaching Artist Institute (TAI) is honored to co-host the UN Summit of the Future side event titled “Home is a Woman” in collaboration with WILPF USA. This event, taking place on September 21, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, will serve as a festival of ideas focused on reparatory justice, women’s safety, and sustainable governance. The concept, co-nurtured by TAI, emphasizes the vital role of women in shaping a secure and cooperative future. By aligning with the UN Pact for the Future, this theme underscores global commitments to inclusivity, justice, and sustainability, highlighting the essential leadership role women play in creating a just world.
TAI continues to advocate for the critical role of artists, culture workers, and creatives in influencing future UN decision-making processes. The organization firmly believes that artists must be central to discussions on good governance and youth engagement, and that creative expression can guide the development of just and innovative governance models. The event will amplify this vision by highlighting the contributions of artists and cultural workers in shaping the future.
“Art is the heartbeat of culture, and culture shapes the future. As artists, we must be present at every table where decisions about governance, justice, and reparatory justice are made. We offer not just creativity but solutions,” said Haki Ammi, President of the Teaching Artist Institute.
The event will feature a range of artistic performances, including music by Sheila Degraff of Haiti, spoken word from New York-based poet Angelic, poetic insight from Jamaican futurist Dr. Claire Nelson, and reflections from Akil Khalfani. These artists are part of a collective effort to demonstrate how creative voices can inspire change and foster community. Moreover, visual artists will be drawing live during the presentations, capturing the unfolding discussions in a unique effort to “paint the future” as the event progresses.
TAI’s President will present case studies on future cooperative housing models and good governance, viewed through an artistic lens. These case studies will showcase the intersection of creativity and governance, illustrating how art can contribute to more equitable, sustainable systems.
The evening will feature an intergenerational panel discussion of WILPF US leadership to include Tara Vassefi, Robyn Lloyd, Tina Shelton, Shelah Harper and WILPF US President Darien De Lu.
This event is supported by Reparations NOW Podcast, represented by Jumoke Ifetayo, and the African American Future Society, represented by Yul Anderson. Additional support comes from the Black Speculative Arts Movement, led by Professor Reynaldo Anderson of Temple University, and Mike Fleisch, Co-Founder of the Global Commons Alliance. Together, these organizations and leaders are united in their dedication to justice, equity, and reparations.
