Bayelsa State, Nigeria – October 24, 2024 – The Bayelsa State government has drawn criticism for its recent budget allocation, which designates N5.4 billion for anniversaries and celebrations for the 2024 fiscal year. This figure stands in stark contrast to the N1.5 billion budgeted for the rehabilitation of hospitals and health centers.
The budget analysis reveals that while the government plans to spend heavily on celebrations, essential services and infrastructure receive significantly less funding. The budget allocates N3.9 billion for the rehabilitation of public schools and only N1.5 billion for road repairs. Notably, N4.3 billion is set aside for the repair of residential buildings, highlighting the prioritization of housing over crucial public services.
Concerns are growing as Bayelsa faces serious public health issues. Reports indicate that approximately 95% of households lack access to sanitary facilities, and 78% do not have clean drinking water. The unemployment rate in the state was reported at 36.7% in 2022, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. These statistics underscore the urgent need for increased investment in healthcare and infrastructure.
The budget also includes N420 million for Christmas decorations and a praise night, with N230.3 million allocated for the praise night and N190 million for holiday decorations. This expenditure has drawn significant attention and criticism, especially given the ongoing economic struggles faced by many residents.
Calls for a reassessment of the state’s budget priorities have intensified, as citizens question the rationale behind spending such large sums on celebrations while critical sectors remain underfunded.
As the Bayelsa government moves forward with its plans for 2024, many residents hope to see a shift in focus towards addressing the pressing needs of healthcare, education, and employment within the state.
