A lawmaker from Abia State, Obi Aguocha, has visited Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is currently detained. The visit took place on October 24, 2024, as part of efforts to find a political solution to Kanu’s ongoing detention.
Kanu was arrested on June 27, 2021, in Kenya and later extradited to Nigeria, where he faces charges including terrorism and treasonable felony related to his broadcasts on Radio Biafra.
In a statement released by Aguocha’s media team, it was noted that Kanu’s legal team had been facing difficulties in meeting with him. In response, Aguocha wrote to the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, seeking assistance.
During the visit, Aguocha met with Kanu and a family member, sharing updates on the situation regarding his legal representation. The DSS informed Aguocha that the lawyers’ difficulties in accessing Kanu were due to a legal matter involving their request for a judge to recuse herself from the case.
The statement confirmed that Kanu’s legal team has now been granted access to him. It also praised the DSS for addressing Kanu’s medical needs and reported that he had received private medical attention as recently as October 3, 2024.
Aguocha expressed gratitude to the DSS for their cooperation and emphasized the importance of upholding Kanu’s fundamental human rights as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution. He remains hopeful that a political resolution will be reached, leading to Kanu’s release and promoting peace in the South-East region.
