Enugu, Nigeria- Protests have broken out in Enugu State after the reported killing of beloved local musician, known as Igbo Jah, allegedly by a police inspector. This incident has sparked widespread outrage among residents, leading to demonstrations across the city.
The inspector suspected in the incident has been arrested, and the Enugu State Police Command has launched a full investigation, confirmed Daniel Ndukwe, the police spokesman for Enugu. However, tensions remain high as protesters demand immediate justice for Igbo Jah.
The protests, which began peacefully, quickly turned volatile, with hundreds of residents marching toward the anti-cult unit’s headquarters, where some demonstrators attempted to set the building on fire. Police officers stationed on-site resisted these attempts, and the situation escalated as protesters took to the streets, blocking major roads in the city, including Onu Asata. Many were seen burning tires and chanting, calling for accountability in the musician’s death.
In response, police forces deployed teargas in an attempt to disperse the crowds. The smoke from the burning tires could be seen from a distance, serving as a visible signal of the community’s frustration and demands for justice.
Enugu’s residents are expressing deep anger over what they perceive as unchecked police violence, underscoring the calls for reform and accountability within the police force. The situation remains tense as the community awaits further information on the investigation and any forthcoming actions by authorities.
Updates are expected as Enugu police continue their inquiry into the incident.
