An official of Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), identified as Emeason Chima, was abducted by gunmen on Saturday near Maduka University, along the Nsukka-Enugu Road. The attackers are reportedly demanding a ransom of N50 million to secure Chima’s release, according to FRSC sources.
Chima, who serves with the Ugbokolo unit of the FRSC (RS4.211), was reportedly driving alone in his Toyota sedan when he was intercepted and taken hostage. A confidential source within the agency disclosed that the kidnappers used Chima’s phone to communicate their ransom demands directly to FRSC unit officials.
An internal FRSC memo from Ugbokolo unit commander Emmanuel Al-Hassan confirmed the incident, stating that the command is fully aware of the situation and is closely monitoring the developments. The memo detailed that Chima was kidnapped after passing Maduka University, at a point along Nsukka-Enugu Road through Opi Junction. Further updates, Al-Hassan noted, will be shared as the situation unfolds.
The South-East region of Nigeria has seen a significant rise in security challenges, with regular reports of abductions and attacks on government officials, security personnel, and other civilians. Nigerian authorities have linked many of these violent incidents to separatist activities by groups like the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), though the group has denied involvement.
Security agencies are currently investigating the incident and efforts are underway to secure Chima’s safe return.
