Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar has filed a lawsuit against Emeka Rollas, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), demanding N30 billion in damages. The lawsuit follows her recent suspension from the Guild, which was announced by Rollas on social media.
Abubakar’s suspension was reportedly due to allegations of slander against others within the Nollywood community. However, the actress has claimed she was not given a chance to address these accusations before the public announcement of her suspension.
In a letter dated October 20, 2024, from her legal representatives, P.D. Pius & Associates, Abubakar accused Rollas of intentionally damaging her reputation. The letter cited the timing of the announcement as particularly distressing, as she has been facing ongoing health challenges.
The letter stated, “Our client has been battling health issues for years, and despite maintaining a professional relationship, you chose this delicate moment during her recovery to spread a false narrative. This has caused her emotional distress and harmed her reputation in society.”
The lawsuit demands an immediate retraction of the alleged defamatory post from Rollas’ social media account, along with a public apology and the N30 billion in damages for reputational harm. The letter concludes with a warning that legal action will proceed if these demands are not met within seven days.
The incident has sparked significant attention in the entertainment industry, with fans and colleagues watching closely to see how the situation unfolds.
