Veteran Nigerian actor Chief Charles Olumo, widely known as Agbako, has passed away at the age of 101. Olumo, renowned for his dynamic performances and long-standing career in Nollywood, died on Thursday, marking the end of an era for one of the industry’s oldest stars.
The Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) confirmed Olumo’s passing through its president, Bolaji Amusan, popularly known as Mr. Latin. In a statement, Mr. Latin honored Olumo’s contributions to the Nigerian film industry, saying, “We announce the passing of Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu, fondly known as Agbako. Details of his burial arrangements will be shared later. Goodnight, father, 25/02/1923 to 31/10/2024.”
Owolabi Ajasa, another prominent Nollywood figure, also paid tribute to Olumo, referring to him as the “eldest figure in the entertainment industry.” Ajasa noted that Agbako passed peacefully in the early hours of Thursday, expressing, “Adieu, Baba Charles! Agbako, sun re o! Goodnight, Baba.”
Colleagues and admirers, including Kunle Afod, remembered Olumo with respect and affection. Afod shared a heartfelt message, writing, “Good night Pa Charles Olumo (Baba Agbako). The oldest actor. 101 years. Sun re ooo, daboO di Oju Ala.”
Olumo, whose career spanned multiple decades, leaves behind a legacy cherished by fans, colleagues, and the Nigerian entertainment industry at large. Known for his compelling roles and unforgettable performances, Agbako’s impact on Nollywood remains immeasurable.
