Benin City, Nigeria — The Edo State Police Command announced the dismissal of Inspector Edith Uduma and Sergeant Abraham on Sunday following an internal investigation into serious allegations of misconduct and extortion. The Command explained that these dismissals were part of its commitment to upholding professional standards within the Nigeria Police Force.
Police Public Relations Officer Moses Yamu stated that the disciplinary actions were based on evidence that Inspector Uduma had used her position to demand money from Sergeant Abraham in an attempt to cover up an alleged crime. Sergeant Abraham is accused of raping a teenage female suspect while on duty.
The investigation revealed that Uduma, who was the Charge Room Officer on the night of October 7, was aware of the alleged incident but did not report it to her superiors. Instead, she contacted her husband, Inspector Ibrahim Mohammed, to allegedly demand a bribe of N1 million from Sergeant Abraham to keep the incident confidential. According to Yamu, when Abraham was only able to pay N45,000, Uduma and her husband decided to report the incident to the Divisional Police Officer and released a video of the incident on social media.
As a result of the investigation, both Uduma and Abraham were dismissed from the force, while Uduma’s husband was demoted to the rank of Sergeant for his involvement in the extortion scheme. “No amount of misinformation can absolve these officers from facing the consequences of their actions,” Yamu stated.
The police spokesperson clarified that any officer unsatisfied with the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings is permitted to appeal under the provisions of the Police Act and Regulation.
