Four Nigerian police officers stationed in Abuja have been suspended after being accused of pocketing ₦31 million out of ₦74 million seized during an unauthorized arrest. The officers, identified as DSP Peter Ejike, Inspector Ekende Edwin, Inspector Esther Okafor, and Sergeant Talabi Kayode, are attached to the Zone 7 Headquarters in Abuja.
The incident occurred on August 26, 2023, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The officers allegedly detained Andrew Ejah, an employee of FATFAD Cargo Nigeria Limited, who was transporting the cash on behalf of his clients. The arrest and subsequent detention at Zone 7 Headquarters were carried out without proper authorization.
The officers reportedly misrepresented the seized amount, claiming it was ₦31.79 million while allegedly embezzling the remaining ₦43.16 million. According to Force Public Relations Officer ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the officers conspired to hide part of the funds and attempted to cover their tracks by damaging evidence, including a phone containing photos of the seized money.
“The officers deliberately tampered with the exhibits and acted criminally, prioritizing personal gain over professional conduct,” Adejobi stated.
Investigations by the Inspector-General of Police’s Monitoring Unit revealed that the officers demanded a share of the recovered money to suppress the case. Their actions were exposed after the rightful owners of the cash petitioned the Force Headquarters.
The four officers have been suspended for severe misconduct, abuse of office, tampering with exhibits, and corrupt practices. Adejobi emphasized that the officers’ actions tarnish the integrity of the police force, which is working to implement reforms.
“They will face prosecution after the conclusion of all legal and administrative procedures,” the statement read.
The police force also refuted allegations that senior officials, including Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, were shielding a cartel accused of smuggling new banknotes. The statement described such claims as baseless attempts to distract from the misconduct of the accused officers.
Adejobi urged the public and media to focus on the ongoing reforms within the police force and avoid spreading false narratives.
The Nigerian Police Force has pledged to prosecute the implicated officers and ensure accountability. This incident highlights persistent challenges within the police system, including corruption and unprofessional conduct, even as the force continues efforts to rebuild public trust.
