The Federal Government of Nigeria has earmarked N5.7 billion in the 2025 budget to support the smooth take-off of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Funtua, in Katsina State.
Senator Muntari Dandutse, representing Katsina South Senatorial District, disclosed this during a press briefing on his one-year achievements in the Senate. Dandutse, who also serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, revealed that the institution has been granted N5 billion in addition to the N2.9 billion allocated for normal intervention projects.
The Senator praised Governor Dikko Umaru Radda for committing N3 billion towards the university’s establishment, ensuring it is ready to commence academic activities this year.
He further announced that the Federal Government has already appointed the Vice-Chancellor and the Governing Council for the new institution. The recruitment of additional academic and non-academic staff is currently in progress, with academic activities expected to begin in September 2025.
Senator Dandutse emphasized that the university would serve as a key educational hub for the North-West region, providing opportunities for students from Katsina and neighboring states.
In a broader effort to improve tertiary education infrastructure, the Senator also disclosed that the Federal Government plans to establish independent solar power projects in universities to provide a reliable electricity supply.
Additionally, the government is working on setting up JAMB Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers in the remaining eight local government areas within the Senator’s constituency. This initiative aims to reduce the difficulties faced by students who currently travel long distances to take their exams.
The establishment of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Funtua, is expected to significantly boost medical education and healthcare services in the region, contributing to Nigeria’s broader efforts to improve the health sector.
