The Borno State Government has suspended Mele Mohammed, the councillor representing Yawa Kura Ward in Abadam Local Government Area, over an alleged disrespectful social media post targeting the Executive Chairman, Malam Fatori.
According to an official letter signed by Bashir Goni Sanda, Acting Director of Local Government Affairs, the suspension was approved by the state government as a disciplinary measure for violating public office conduct laws. The letter, also addressed to the Executive Chairman, stated that the suspension would remain in effect pending further investigation.
“The suspension became necessary due to misconduct unbecoming of a public officeholder, as he disrespected the Local Government Chairman through social media, which is against the law,” the statement read.
This incident highlights growing concerns over restrictions on free speech and the use of disciplinary actions against public officials and citizens for their online activities.
Since President Bola Tinubu took office in May 2023, there has been a rise in the arrest and detention of activists, journalists, and ordinary citizens over social media posts deemed critical of government officials.
In recent cases:
– Olamide Thomas, a nurse and activist, was arrested after posting a Facebook video criticizing government policies.
– Bristol Tamunobiefiri (PIDOM), a whistleblower, was detained for alleged breaches of national security.
– Suleiman Usman (Sultan) was arrested on accusations of cyberbullying after criticizing the Borno State Geographic Information Service (BOGIS) Executive Secretary, Engineer Adam Bababe.
Civil rights groups have condemned the increasing use of cybercrime laws to silence dissent, calling for reforms to protect freedom of expression in Nigeria.
