At least 13 hunters have been feared dead following a deadly ambush by suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group in Hurumi Forest, located in Talewa ward of Tangaza Local Government Area, Sokoto State.
The incident occurred on Thursday during a seasonal hunting expedition when the hunters—drawn from several communities in the LGA—were suddenly attacked deep in the forest.
Local sources revealed that despite prior warnings from authorities about terrorist activity in the area, the hunters proceeded with their annual tradition, armed only with Dane guns and accompanied by hunting dogs.
“They walked straight into the terrorists’ stronghold without realizing it,” said a resident of Tangaza. “So far, only three bodies have been recovered, and ten hunters are still missing. Some survivors have made it back home.”
The attackers, believed to be operating from hidden camps within the dense forest, reportedly opened fire without warning, leaving the hunters with little chance to defend themselves.
Security forces are yet to confirm the full casualty figure as search operations continue in the forest.
This latest incident underscores the growing insecurity in Sokoto and other parts of Northern Nigeria, where rural communities remain vulnerable to terrorist and bandit attacks.
