A yet-to-be-identified policeman went on a shooting spree in the Watt business area of Calabar, Cross River State, on Sunday morning, leaving three people dead and one injured.
Eyewitnesses reported that the officer suddenly stepped out of a nearby police station, brandishing a cocked gun, and began shooting at random. Panic spread as people fled for safety. Despite their efforts to escape, at least four individuals were hit by bullets, with three succumbing to their injuries.
Some bystanders claimed the officer “ran mad” before opening fire.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that the officer had been arrested. However, they did not disclose his name or provide an official casualty count at the time of reporting.
A statement from the police, shared via their official X (formerly Twitter) handle @CRS_PoliceNG, read:
“The matter has been handled this morning, and the inspector is in detention. A press release will be issued shortly.”
Further details are expected as investigations continue.
