A student of Federal University Birnin Kebbi has been abducted and a night guard killed following a violent attack by unknown gunmen at Istijaba hostel, Unguwar Jaji, in Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at about 3:00 AM. The attackers stormed the off-campus student residence and kidnapped Augustine Madubiya, a student of the Economics Department, while he and other students were asleep.
The University’s Public Relations Officer, Jamilu Muhammad, confirmed the incident, stating that the gunmen took the student away without resistance after gaining access to the premises.
In the same attack, a Fulani cattle rearer who was tending to his livestock nearby was shot multiple times. He was rushed to a hospital but later died from his injuries, according to medical personnel on duty.
Confirming the attack, the Police Public Relations Officer for Kebbi State, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Kalgo has launched a manhunt. Officers are currently combing nearby forests in a bid to rescue the abducted student and track down the assailants.
The attack has once again highlighted the growing concern over insecurity in parts of Northern Nigeria, especially targeting students and vulnerable rural communities.
